Tony Palmeri for Oshkosh City Council

The Lake Winnebago Green Party proudly endorses UW Oshkosh Professor Tony Palmeri for Oshkosh City Council in the Spring 2007 Election!

Tony Palmeri has been an active member of the Lake Winnebago Green Party for a number of years. In 2004 he ran a spirited campaign for Wisconsin State Assembly (Dist. 54) as a Green, winning over 2,600 votes (9%) in a four way race. He has been an outspoken critic of local government, and has been involved in several legal challenges to Oshkosh City Council actions, most recently when the City Council went into closed session over a multi-million dollar development in violation of state law.

Tony on Tony:

City government is broken. In recent election cycles candidates have told us that if elected they would be taxpayer friendly and ask tough questions. Instead we have gotten garbage fees, buck passing, and blatant open meetings law violations.

We can and must do better. As a member of the Council I will fight for open and accountable government, quality services delivered efficiently, and strong neighborhoods.

I’m 45 years old, own a home near City Hall, and have been a resident of Oshkosh for 18 years. I’ve taught at UW Oshkosh for all of those years. In addition to teaching I have served as Chair of the Department of Communication, President of the Faculty Senate, and president of the Association of University of Wisconsin Professionals. I’m currently serving as President of the Wisconsin Communication Association, an organization that named me “Communication Educator of the Year” in 2004.

Many Oshkosh residents recognize me from the public affairs television show “Commentary” I co-hosted with former Mayor Jim Mather, or from “Eye on Oshkosh” which I co-host with Cheryl Hentz. On those programs I have developed a reputation as someone who does his homework, asks tough but fair questions, speaks truth to power, and helps educate the community on important issues. I will bring those same qualities to the Council.

Our community faces some difficult issues over the next few years, including how to attract and create family supporting jobs, how to deliver basic services in an era of tight budgets, how to redevelop downtown, and many others. The current Council and City Administration have not gotten the job done, and as a result citizens no longer trust or believe that local government is on their side.

If elected I will work hard to restore public trust in local government.

Vote Palmeri for Oshkosh on February 20!

Amendment to ban civil unions - the LWGP strongly opposed the proposed constitutional amendment to ban civil unions and domestic partnership benefits in Wisconsin's Constitution. We support equal rights before the law of all Wisconsin Citizens, regardless of their orientation.

Death Penalty advisory referendum - The LWGP opposes the return of the death penalty in Wisconsin.

County Board Size - the LWGP opposes reducing the size of the the Winnebago Co. Board and all County Board sizes in our area. Smaller county boards reduce the level of direct democracy in our communities, and increases the likelyhood that Big Money can buy our Board.

Diebold TSx Touch Screen Machines - the LWGP opposes the implementation of the Diebold TSx Touch Screen voting machines in Winnebago County, which was recently approved by the municipal clerks and the Winnebago Co. Board.

We have spoken up at every Board meeting regarding these machines, and have demonstrated in front of the court house. We believe that these specific machines threaten our elective process in Winnebago Co. due to their proven security weaknesses as reported in the media, by election experts, and by their track record in elections this year.

We urge citizens to avoid using these machines if at all possible this September and November to ensure casting a ballot that can be counted and recounted.
